'The Vampire Diaries' EP Julie Plec talks 'My Brother's Keeper': Damon and Elena do the deed -- but are her feelings real?
By Carina Adly MacKenzie November 29, 2012 11:59 PM ET
Okay, "Vampire Diaries" fans, we know you've had an emotional evening. Regardless of who you're rooting for when it comes to the love triangle, tonight's Miss Mystic Falls pageant was packed with unexpected twists and turns. Elena didn't hesitate to tell Damon that she and Stefan had broken up because of her feelings for the elder Salvatore brother, and while Damon sympathized with Stefan's heartbreak, he wasn't particularly sorry about the whole thing.
That became abundantly clear when Elena decided to crash at Chez Salvatore to get away from her vampire hunter brother. After a little whiskey and a romantic fireside dance, Delena fans finally got their wish when Damon and Elena couldn't resist any longer, and finally slept together. Of course, it was a bittersweet moment, because on the other side of their tiny town, Caroline and Stefan realized that Elena is sired to Damon. It's a rare condition for vampires, as Damon pointed out in Season 3, but does happen.
For the record, we haven't seen any evidence from any of Klaus' sired hybrids that being sired causes one to have romantic or sexual feelings toward someone, which is worth remembering as the story moves forward.
The sire bond does explain a lot of the curious things about Elena's vampire transition -- most notably the fact that she can't stomach blood unless it comes directly from a human vein. No other vampire we've seen so far has been such a picky eater, and personally, I'm glad that finally makes sense! There are still a lot of unanswered questions, though, so I tracked down executive producer Julie Plec for an exclusive interview to follow up the controversial episode. If there's one thing you should take from this, it's that there's still plenty of hope that Elena's feelings for Damon are real -- so don't
Zap2it: The sire bond has been highly speculated about over the last couple of weeks. How long has this been in the works? Did you guys know, when Elena turned, that you'd go this route?
Plec: We came up with it back when we launched Tyler's hybrid story, actually. When Tyler was sired to Klaus, and Damon said, "Oh, s***, I know what this is," that planted the seed of, when we finally go down this road with Elena, whoever's blood she drank to become a vampire sired her to that vampire. From there it was a natural conclusion that it should be Damon, so it's actually something that's been in the works for a very long time. The reason we kept the hybrid storyline alive this year and kept it sort of front and center was in order to create that context for the audience so that when we found out Elena was sired, it would all make sense
It's definitely alarming for fans who have been waiting to see Damon and Elena get together for them to finally hook up, but have it be intercut with evidence that her feelings for him might not be genuine. Is there still hope that her feelings for him are real?
Without taking sides one way or the other, just looking at it objectively from our point of view as storytellers, there is more hope than ever for them. It's just combined with a lot of very deep questions. Damon is a character who, his whole life -- as a vampire and as a human -- was looking for love and acceptance, and for someone to finally say, "Hey, you're good enough." He finally gets that from Elena, and now he has to question it. He wants to believe it's real. She truly believes it's real. But there's that nagging doubt, as to how much of it is true love and how much is the effects of a sire bond. It's a question that's going to take these two people who do care about each other so deeply, and just put the tiniest bit of an obstacle in their path. They have to figure out how to get around it.
I've been sort of sad to see people on Twitter calling Elena derogatory names because they feel like she moved too fast, sleeping with Damon right after the breakup with Stefan. Did you guys have any concern in the writers' room that she was jumping into his arms, and his bed, too quickly?
Plec: What we wanted to do in the writers' room was to give Stefan and Elena the most human, honest, and respectable breakup between a couple that had been that important for so long, and to put a real end to that, so that there was a freedom for her to now give in to this passion and this interest that's been brewing for over two and a half seasons. In the real world, would it happen that quickly? Maybe not. But I do think that the punctuation on the breakup is her finally giving in to these feelings for Damon, and then to raise the question of "Oh, God. Is that what she really felt or is it all part of the supernatural link between them?"
I loved Stefan in this episode. He's really on the edge -- particularly in the scenes with Jeremy, when he was really kind of scary. Does his heartbreak over Elena have the potential to push him back into his ripper ways?
Plec: Oh, he's definitely walking the tightrope on the edge there, and will continue to do so. He's trying to be reasonable, he's trying to be rational, but he's very clearly emotionally driven by a desire to, as she called him out on, "fix her." To Stefan's credit, he might be right. He might actually be right, that this is not who she is and this is not who she's supposed to be, so his desire is to try to correct that at all costs. So the question which we'll be exploring is: is this who she is? We don't know.
Before the breakup, Damon and Stefan were in the best place they've been, as brothers, in a long time. Is that in jeopardy now?
Plec: Well, it's been compromised by circumstance, but both of them, to their credit in the next episode, try to take the high road. What comes out of them both trying to take the high road, and to do what's right by each other, and do right by Elena, actually launches the whole next chapter of the show.
This week, Stefan found a murderer to turn into a vampire and kill, but in last week's episode, Jeremy's victim was a hybrid friend of Tyler's who had just helped them. There's sort of this disregard for other lives, outside of their immediate circle. Is that something that's going to be addressed down the line? Obviously, it caused some tension between Tyler and Caroline. What that served to do was to basically let Tyler be the voice of conscience, and the voice of reason. He's saying, "Hey, you guys are all doing something in the name of what you percieve to be good, and I don't approve, and it's not okay, and it's not cool." It's a little bit of that Jiminy Cricket reminder that our heroes are doing things to protect what they love, but there's a big shady gray area there. On our show, there's a very fine line separating hero from villain. We want it to be clear that just because Stefan and Damon think something's right, doesn't mean it is.
Next week Stefan tells Damon about the sire bond suspicions, and head to New Orleans for some answers, and we get a look back at where they were in the 1940s. What are you most looking forward to people seeing?
It's a nice window into Damon and who he was then, and who he wanted to be, especially in relationship to his brother, and how he wanted to do right by his brother back then. It kind of informs his decision about how to do right by his brother today. We revisit our favorite girl Lexi, who has been working hard since the ripper days to get Stefan back on track. She brings him to Damon to say, "Okay, the next step in your recovery is to reconcile with your brother." It's a nice moment of insight into where they were at the time.

The Vampire Diaries’ Damon and Elena: Are Her Feelings Real? The Big Boss Spills!
by Kristin Dos Santos Wed., Dec. 5, 2012 9:44 AM PST
Bob Mahoney / The CW
To say Vampire Diaries fans have been put through the emotional wringer this week is something of an understatement. Damon and Elena finally slept together—and to the shock of precisely no one, Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev have crazy-hot chemistry! But that was followed up only seconds later by the realization that Elena is most likely sired to Damon, which may or may not cause her to be something of a romantic sex-bot.
Now, anyone who has been blessed with the gift of sight probably feels an uncontrollable urge to be Somerhalder's sex-bot, so we're pretty convinced this has nothing to do with the whole sire thing, but hey, we aren't writing the show.
No matter who you're rooting for in the show's core love triangle (Stefan-Elena-Damon), you're probably hungry for info on whether Elena's feelings are in fact legit. Here's what executive producer Julie Plec is willing to spill…
Get the scoop on what comes next for Damon and Elena!
Does Elena really love Damon? Or is it all that blasted sire stuff? Damon and Elena are both going to be asking themselves these questions. Damon, used to rejection, is probably going to question it even more than Elena, who has a very strong opinion about how she feels.
When does Elena find out? Next week.
Is there any real hope for Damon and Elena as a legit couple? The sire bond issue will force them each to dig deep into their feelings towards each other as they try to define and defend them. This could either make them stronger than ever or tear them apart.
How does Stefan react to Elena being sired to Damon? For Stefan, the shock turns to hope that this helps explain why he and Elena grew so far apart. But we'll also see a lot more of Stefan finding his own strength and redefining what he wants for himself.
The Vampire Diaries' next ep airs Thursday, and if the preview clip released by the CW is any indication, Stefan and Damon's bromance is gonna hit a definite rough patch. Not that it hasn't a gazillion times before…

Best of 2012 (Behind the Scenes): Drowning Elena on 'The Vampire Diaries'
In the May season 3 finale of The Vampire Diaries, Nina Dobrev did some of the finest underwater acting ever in not one, but two drowning scenes — one that flashed back to the night Elena’s parents died and Stefan rescued her, and one in which Elena died after demanding that Stefan save Matt. Here, supervising producer Chris Grismer, who helped episode director John Behring helm the chill-inducing underwater sequence shot over three days, takes us inside the scene that changed the show forever. For more stories behind this year’s top TV and movie moments
I started the actors training for the scene about two months before we shot. They had to train every weekend with dive instructors. Nina Dobrev was already PADI-certified, but those who weren’t had to become. They also had to learn how to act underwater for a long period of time without air: They had to learn how to do a scene and then get air between takes from a safety diver, who was never more than five or six feet away, instead of coming back up to the surface, which I think was pretty terrifying for them. Some of them wanted to swim to the surface between takes, and I had to explain to them that if you start at the surface and swim 20 feet down, you’re kinda almost out of air by the time we say “action.” [Laughs] And then they had to learn how to do it in an enclosed space. I don’t know if you’ve ever been underwater in an enclosed space, but your body just doesn’t want you in there. The actors have to be pretty brave and pretty strong. Nina Dobrev took to it so unbelievably well. She was amazing. I think in the first two weeks, I saw some video of her inside pretending to panic, and I was just blown away by it.
We shot at a police training facility in Georgia with a pool that’s designed for simulating river rescues. So we were lucky enough to build our set inside there. If the actors wanted to communicate to myself and John Behring, the other director, they would have to communicate through hand signals on the screen, because we were up at the surface like cowards. [Laughs] No, it’s hard to direct underwater. Nina is known for always wanting one more take because she always has an idea, and she’s great with that. So she points with her hand that she wants one more take and to keep rolling. It was when she was underwater with her dad, and she improv’d mouthing the words “I love you” to him. I remember it just sent chills down everyone’s spine at the monitors. There were some people crying. It was pretty amazing. I wanted to tell it with the hands, too, with the hands coming away from each other. I thought that was important.
It’s a hard thing to do, to really feel the stillness. The one moment we weren’t quite getting, and that Nina and I worked together on quite a bit, was the panic right before you give into it. She panics right before she gives up and just goes still in the water. I think when you make your body panic like that, the muscle memory when you’re in an enclosed space probably also makes you panic in real life as well. I know that when she was panicking a number of times underwater, people on the surface believed it. I think there was a couple of times that we cut early, and she was like, “I was acting.” [Laughs] She’s a very good actor, so it’s hard to tell when she’s pretending and when she’s not.
The sequence of the truck sinking was in the script originally, but for time, [showrunner Julie Plec] was forced to cut it out. And then when I was directing the second unit, I was like, we’re just gonna get it. We got that whole sinking sequence in one hour using balloons on the car and just slowly deflating them so it could sink. The actors had to actually be inside the car while it sank and then hold their breath right when it went under water.
Not only were the actors amazing, but there’s stunts underneath there that are pretty subtle. Like when Stefan pulls the door off, there’s a stunt person, I think it was a woman, lying upside down underneath the car, holding her breath because the air would be in the frame, who grabs the door to help rip it off the hinges.
It was amazing to work on because everyone was excited about it. No one had done anything that big underwater before. We created this underwater world for the river. And to do the bridge jump itself was a phenomenal night. We almost didn’t get it because the truck came right up to the edge and didn’t quite have the power [to go over], and it almost just fell off the bridge. But then it just rolled back into place to try again by accident. The film gods were smiling on us when we did that sequence.

Vampire Diaries Writer Charlie Charbonneau on Awesome Salvatore Brother Moments in Season 4, Episode 8 —
It must be so strenuous, writing about sexy vampires for a living. And yet, somehow, Vampire Diaries writer Charlie Charbonneau has managed to make it part of his everyday life. Truly astonishing!
To find out how this TV writer has survived in spite of the constant threat of Original-vampire sex lurking around every dark, wonderful corner, we decided to ask him a few questions. But, in particular, about his upcoming episode, “We’ll Always Have Bourbon Street,” which airs this Thursday.
Wetpaint Entertainment: Which character are you most excited for fans to see this episode? Charlie Charbonneau: Everyone has some juicy stuff this episode. I'm excited for the Damon [Ian Somerhalder] and Stefan [Paul Wesley] fans. They'll get to see some awesome Salvatore brother moments.
So far, which has been your favorite character to write in Season 4? Puhlease, Hayley [Phoebe Tonkin]. Hot werewolf with a chip on her shoulder, need I say more?
What's the weirdest part of working on a show about supernatural creatures? Trying to apply the supernatural rules to real life. Tip: don't.
Do you ever worry about how the fans will react when you're writing an episode? I think with every episode the TVD Writers hope to entertain, surprise, and impress the TVD Fans. We have some of the most loyal, awesome, and vocal fans out there. Overloading the twitter servers is a lofty, but genuine goal. #TVDFans
Are you Team Stelena or Delena? Team Klaroline, for sure.
Out of all the supernatural creatures you get to work with, which are your favorite? (Vampires, Originals, Hybrids, Doppelgangers, Werewolves) What about Witches!? Hello! I had the pleasure of working with Kat Graham [Bonnie] (who plays a present witch) and Phoebe Tonkin (who I got to work with when she played a witch on The Secret Circle) on this episode. Witches scare the hell out of me in the best way and there are some rad witchy moments in this episode.
What do you have on the walls of your office for vampy inspiration? A watercolor of a BMW convertible with fangs that my friend Cliff created for a Spirit of Children charity art auction. And a picture of me and Kevin Williamson from when I worked as his assistant. Is the writers room set up like a vampire den? The company in the room is pretty great. But I'd rather be breaking story in the Salvatore House or the Mystic Grill.
Is there an episode of Vampire Diaries that you wish you'd gotten to write? All of them.
Can you tell us a little about the process of collaborating for this episode? The TVD Writers are all incredibly talented and supportive, starting with Julie Plec. Jose [Molina] is a genius and brought his A+ game. I learned so much from him. On set, the director Jesse Warn and our entire cast and crew were stellar, and our Post and Editorial staff never cease to amaze me. I still cannot comprehend how everyone at TVD brings 110% every single episode, but the evidence is there Thursdays at 8 p.m.
And the evidence of Charlie’s hard work will be on display for the Vampire Diaries Family to see this Thursday at 8 p.m.; will you be tuning in?!
