True Blood Werewolf to Guest on Beauty and the Beast

True Blood actress Kelly Overton will guest-star on an episode of Beauty and the Beast, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

Overton will play Claire, an intelligent and extremely athletic doctoral student who hits it off with medical examiner Evan (Max Brown) after they meet online.

The CW series, based loosely on the 1987 CBS drama, stars Smallville alum Kristin Kreuk as Catherine Chandler, a cop who witnessed her mother's death years prior. Turns out Cat was saved from her mother's gunmen by Vincent Keller (Jay Ryan), a doctor-turned-soldier who was transformed into a beast after a faulty military medical experiment.

Smallville bosses shape a new breed of "Superman" in Beauty and the Beast

Also appearing in the new CW series is Jeremy Glazer, who will play a med student named Michael whose fiancé has gone missing.

Overton most recently played the werewolf love interest to Alcide (Joe Manganiello) on True Blood, while Glazer has appeared on CSI, Bones and Castle. Both characters will be in the fourth episode, with Overton potentially recurring.

EXCLUSIVE!

Watch Now: First Look at the CW's Beauty and the Beast

What happened to you?"

Sure, that's not exactly the best question to kick start a friendship, or in this case, a dangerous romance. But judging by this new Beauty and the Beast promo, Catherine and Vincent's situation will be anything but ordinary.

In this exclusive first look at CW's new series Beauty and the Beast (premiering Oct 11), Kristin Kreuk (the beauty!) and Jay Ryan (the beast!) show off their dark sides by running around town look pretty (a CW given), except these two are solving dangerous crimes together. Because remember, there is no beauty without the beast.

Tune in this fall to The CW

Beauty and the Beast is a new CW TV series that is set to premiere on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012 at 9/8 p.m. CST. Loosely based on the 1987 series of the same name, it stars Kristin Kreuk (Smallville) as Catherine "Cat" Chandler and Jay Ryan (Terra Nova) as Vincent Keller.

Love triangle?

We all know that the beauty and the beast will end up together, but will there be a love triangle along the way? Cat is also close to her coworker -- the handsome medical examiner, Evan Marks (Max Brown, The Tudors) -- and they have a very flirtatious relationship.

The murder

Cat (Kristin Kreuk) witnessed her mom's murder when she was young. We know that it was the beast who saved Cat, but it will be interesting to see if Cat can solve the case (with the help of Vincent) so many years later.

Girl power

Cat and her partner, Tess Vargas, (Nina Lisandrello, Nurse Jackie) make an awesome team. It's great to see women working together instead of against each other on TV shows. Will Cat's secret about Vincent drive a wedge between them?

The secret

As Cat becomes closer and closer to Vincent while he helps solve her cases, it will become increasingly difficult for the duo to keep Vincent's secret. Will he be able to remain a mystery and lurk in the shadows? Is there a cure for his rage?

The beautiful people

Like all The CW shows, Beauty and the Beast is full of beautiful people who are fun to watch. With hunks like Jay Ryan and Max Brown leading the way, there's plenty of eye-candy on this show.

The difference

The show is very loosely based on the beloved 1987 CBS series of the same name, which starred Linda Hamilton as Catherine and Ron Perlman as Vincent. The main difference between the two shows is that Vincent was a beast on the outside in the former series -- something Cat needed to look past. This time, the scenario is not exactly the same. In the 2012 series, the beast only becomes beastly when he's enraged. Fans of the original show might not be thrilled with this primary difference, but should give the show a chance. With a beautiful cast and quality writing, the new Beauty and the Beast may find its way onto your must-watch list this fall

Beauty and the Beast’ about inner scars

either courageous or cowardly.

The new Beauty and the Beast, which debuts Thursday, Oct. 11 on CW and Showcase, is lacking a beast in the traditional physical sense.

The beauty is Kristin Kreuk, that's easy. But the beast is hunky Jay Ryan with a small scar on his cheek.

Ah, but he's a beast within. Well, sometimes. Occasionally. When he's not helping and protecting people. And his beastly tendencies aren't his fault, anyway, so back off, okay?

Hmmm. Is this approach courageous as it acknowledges the vast majority of real-life beasts aren't threatening on the outside?

Or is it cowardly in that it wouldn't risk having a main character look like a beast because TV audiences in 2012 - especially young viewers - would balk?

The creators are trying to sell the former.

"Most of the beasts in our lives don't look like an actual beast," co-executive producer Jennifer Levin says.

"They are sometimes charming. There's something that might draw us to them. So there is that thing of what happens when you fall in love with a beast.

"It was beastliness on the inside that was more interesting to us."

So this is not your parents' Beauty and the Beast, a.k.a. the 1980s version with Linda Hamilton and a truly beastly Ron Perlman.

"The romance is still there and the themes are still there," Kreuk says. "But it's very much based in our society, what could be happening right now."

In this new foray, Catherine "Cat" Chandler (Kreuk) is a homicide detective haunted by her tragic past, in which she witnessed the murder of her mother. The teenaged Cat might have been killed, too, but something - or someone - saved her.

Years later, while investigating a case, Cat uncovers fingerprints that lead to a doctor named Vincent Keller (Ryan). He reportedly was killed by enemy fire in Afghanistan in 2002.

But might Vincent have been a victim of clandestine U.S. military experimentation? And if he's still alive, is it possible that Vincent and Cat have a mysterious connection?

Ryan advises not to judge Beauty and the Beast too harshly by its setup-heavy pilot episode.

"He (Vincent) is actually more like Jekyll and Hyde, and as you go through the series, you'll notice that more as it develops," Ryan says.

"It's almost like two people inside this one character. The beast is more like a serial killer, and Vincent is trying to suppress him throughout.

"You don't get a lot of that in the pilot, but as we go along, that will become more apparent, and the beast will become much more dangerous."

The question remains, will viewers accept a Beauty and the Beast in which the beast doesn't look like a beast?

Hey, vampires are sexy now, so you never know.

Bericht von " MSN.com " Kanada

New Beauty and the Beast reinvents '80s cult favourite

He was only six when the original Beauty and the Beast debuted on CBS back in 1987, but New Zealand actor Jay Ryan has distinct memories of it from his childhood.

“I used to watch it when I came home from school,” he says. “My nana would always watch it so I sat down and watched it too. But I really liked that show. And Ron Perlman was just incredible, y’know? I mean, he won awards, and he was acting through all that rubber.”

Who knew that 25 years later Ryan would be in Toronto filming a new version of his childhood favourite, playing the Perlman role? Just to remind those of you who do not remember: the 1980s Beauty and the Beast was a romantic drama which cast Linda Hamilton (The Terminator) as Catherine Chandler, a New York lawyer who falls under the protection of Vincent (Perlman, Hellboy, TV’s Sons of Anarchy), a noble man-beast who lives in the tunnels beneath the city, after Catherine is attacked by thugs. The show lasted three seasons and became a cult favourite.

Designed as a reimagining of that show, the new Beauty and the Beast stars Vancouver-born actress Kristen Kreuk (TV’s Smallville) as Catherine “Cat” Chandler, a New York homicide detective haunted by the murder of her mother nine years earlier. The then-teenaged Catherine was saved from her mother’s assailants by a mysterious, animalistic figure who turns out to be Vincent Keller (Jay Ryan, Terra Nova). A doctor who enlisted in the army after his brothers were killed in 9/11, Vincent was reported killed by enemy fire while serving in Afghanistan in 2002. Now back in New York, Vincent takes a special interest in Catherine, and they forge a bond after she tracks him down during the course of a murder investigation. But Vincent has a secret: he turns into a powerful beast whenever he becomes enraged.

Given his love of the original (“that romantic element and the sort of mythology of it was really cool”), Ryan was initially reluctant to sign up for the new series, worried it would simply retread old ground. “I didn’t want to remake that show. Because why fix something that’s not broke?”

Fortunately he found the pilot script “quite plausible in a heightened sense” and liked the series’ proposed mix of police procedural and
mythology. “It makes for an interesting show, ‘cause there’s lots to go on.”

The chance to play a character with two very different sides to him also held a big appeal.

“I get to play Vincent, who’s trying to regain his humanity and be the man he used to be, and sort of indulge in society again and forge a relationship with a woman and do all of these everyday things that people take for granted, and then him trying to quash this demon inside him, which comes out and puts everyone around him at risk, including himself.

“And I come from a very physical background as an actor; I did a lot of physical theatre and stuff like that. It’s fun for me to play this creature; throw my whole body in to it. And it feels quite theatrical and fantastical to do that.”

On that note, while we do not get to see much of the transformed Beast to start with, Ryan promises (and hopes) that later episodes will reveal more of the full-on creature. After all, Ryan’s Beast makeup – which consists of eight pieces (plus teeth and contacts) and covers his neck, face, and half his torso – takes up to five hours to apply, and Ryan often finds himself in it for up to sixteen hours at a stretch.

It is perhaps no surprise then that the Kiwi turns into a bit of a beast himself when suited up as his character’s darker half.

“I’ve been told by Kristin and other cast [that] I have this alter ego that comes out when I’m the Beast, and I turn into a joker basically. I think I can get away with certain things and saying certain things because I’ve got this thing on my face.”

Speaking of his co-star Kreuk, Ryan attributes their good working relationship to their shared work ethic and a mutual commitment to making each script work.

“We’ve definitely got the same headspace, and she’s great to work with,” he says. “We’ve got a good chemistry, I guess. We’re both present and working with each other. And she’s fun. I can make her laugh, so that’s good. She finds me funny.”

Currently based in Toronto for the duration of filming, Ryan has quickly grown to appreciate his adopted home.

“I love it. I love the temperament of the people; it’s very similar to Australians. And the city has kind of a similar feel to Melbourne, which is my home base. It feels quite comfy and warm here, even though it’s going to be frickin’ cold soon.”

Beauty and the Beast premieres Oct. 11 at 9 p.m. ET on Showcase.

Kristin Kreuk & Jay Ryan im Interwiev mit " Zap2it "

'Beauty and the Beast' stars Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan on damsels in distress and shades of grey

"Beauty and the Beast" might have already caught some flack ahead of its debut for the simple fact that its Beast, a former military man-turned-experiment gone wrong, has a single, sexy scar running down his cheek. But that's no reason not to tune in to The CW's newest drama, premiering Thursday, Oct. 11 at 9 p.m., following "The Vampire Diaries."

The new show features former "Smallville" star Kristin Kreuk as the Beauty, Catherine, a New York cop who was drawn to the force after her mother's murder. She stumble's upon the Beast, Vincent (Jay Ryan), and discovers he's somehow connected to the case. Together, they solve crimes.

Zap2it sat down with Kreuk and Ryan ahead of their show's debut, where they discussed why their show is more than just a procedural, why the Beauty is no damsel in distress, and the flirtation between their two characters.

Zap2it: So, your show is a cop procedural, but there are other elements to it.
JR: It's a procedural with a huge mythological element to it. I feel like procedural is kind of like the "A" storyline, the case of the week that will continue on and on, but the "B" storyline is the mythological stuff, the relationship between Catherine and Vincent. And there's almost a "C" storyline, which is this dark, sort of presence of [the company behind the Beast experiment] who are trying to hunt Vincent down.
KK: Those are the three basic elements of our show.

How do they find each other?
KK: The reason Catherine finds him in the first place is because of her job. Because she's a detective, she can find this stuff out, which is why she chose to do it in the first place. She wanted to be able to have access to all of that information and feel in control of that. So as we go through each episode, the climb will generally be a metaphor for what's going on for the characters. Sometimes it will be more obvious, sometimes less obvious, but there's a connection between them. Sometimes Vincent will be involved and sometimes he won't be. [Laughs] But no matter what's going on, the cases will push Catherine into a certain emotional space, or her relationship with Vincent will, and will help tie everything together.

So, what kind of relationship will they have?
JR: It's going to be a dangerous, spontaneous, give-and-take sort of relationship. It's going to be the ultimate relationship that people hope to have but when they're in it it's really..
.
KK: I don't hope to have that relationship.

JR: You don't? That's about passion and love and everything's hiding. I think that when you're really in love, you go to all of those extremes.
KK: Yeah, they'll see the darkest parts of each other, which is important for love to develop in any way. Like, true love doesn't exist [only] in the world of, "I see the best in you all the time. La la la la la." It's like, "I see you. And I know that you aren't bad. You aren't the bad stuff that you do."

Obviously Catherine is a cop and she's tough, but Vincent is there trying to come and save her. How do you prevent her from being a damsel in distress?
KK: I was just talking about this a little while ago. It's interesting because, let's be honest, the Beast is stronger than Catherine. Physically, his capacity is incredible. In certain circumstances, physically as a person, she can't do everything herself. So, there is that element where I don't think it's bad that he is there to do that. I think if it happens all the time, we draw an assumption that she is unable to take care of herself, which isn't true. So they won't be doing that. There's going to the partnership. Also, and it may not be from kicking people, but she's going to help him and protect him as well as he will her, and it becomes something they do together, not just one-sided where there's the damsel and then there's the hero.

JR: Yeah. It's a very balanced relationship and they respect what they give each other. And what happens will be playing out on the series. They're two very similar characters. I keep saying they're two Alphas. And they both want the same things but do them in a very different way. So that's a big learning process for the two of them.

KK: Yeah. In some ways, I think, Catherine is very righteous. I think he is a little more grey.
JR: He is too. He has a little bit more baggage, though, around him. And whatever his actions are, there's consequences for not only him, but everyone around him.

KK: And Catherine doesn't see that in her life. She believes there's a "right" and a "wrong," and a "good" and a "bad," and you have to do things to make sure that the bad people go away, which isn't true. And that's gonna all unravel.
JR:It's not black and white.

"Beauty and the Beast" airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on The CW.

'Beauty and the Beast': Kristin Kreuk, Jay Ryan on 'Internal Demons,' Romance Amidst Chaos

12:58 PM PDT 10/11/2012 by Philiana Ng

The series conceit combines mythology with the procedural, and as Kreuk tells THR, every episode centers on a case: "Every crime is a metaphor for whatever is going on."

A modern-day retelling of the classic fairy tale story, the latest iteration starring Smallville grad Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan, centers on a detective, Catherine, (Kreuk) who begins a romance with a doctor named Vincent (Ryan), who went missing in Afghanistan and was at one point thought to be dead. The concept may seem generic at first, but as the stars reassure, there is more to the story than meets the eye.

"The dark element that they're going to take the Beast excites me," Ryan told The Hollywood Reporter, "because that's where I wanted to go with it. I want to see how much of a killing machine the Beast can be. Originally the network toyed with the idea of the Beast being a serial killer, so there's an element of that that may bubble up again in the series."

Catherine's tragic family story -- her mother was shot and killed in front of her -- will be a major factor as the series unfolds. "Catherine has a certain amount of tolerance for certain things that other people don't," Kreuk said. "There isn't a lot to be afraid of anymore."

Kreuk and Ryan spoke to THR about the show's The X-Files-esque quality, the danger that faces Catherine and Vincent and delving deep into the darker aspects of the story.

THR: What three shows would you liken Beauty and the Beast to?

Ryan: The Vampire Diaries for the look, the original Beauty and the Beast for the romance and The X-Files. In some ways, X-Files was a really unique procedural about aliens and sci-fi elements, but it was kind of the case of the week. I think we have that with Catherine's cop background. Mulder and Scully had that connection, I feel that we will be playing off that as well. If you stuck all three and drew out a graphic novel, then you'd have our show. [Laughs]

Kreuk: Nikita on an action level, the old Beauty and the Beast and CSI.

THR: You made your first visit to Comic-Con this past summer. How do you think the pilot was received there?

Ryan: There was a lot of explaining to do, especially them seeing me and Kristin and the whole Beast element. People sort of looked at me and went, “Wait, how does that work?” That was interesting to see their point of view and see how passionate they were about the Beast. Our version of the Beast is an internal demon. And sure, he does beast out physically and look [that way], but not all the time. He does get grotesque. As the series goes on, you’ll see that element a lot more, especially because we want the Beast to mutate and almost overpower Vincent’s humanity to create great conflict – and a threat to Catherine as well.

Kreuk: They were laughing at the jokes. They seemed invested. They stayed for the questions. No one mass exited the room, there were no boos and they seemed genuinely excited about it.

THR: Can you speak to the dynamic that’s established early on between Catherine and Vincent? How does that evolve, knowing that there is this element of danger?

Kreuk: Catherine needs to believe that there are good and bad guys in the world, that if she stops the bad guys, nobody will go through what she went through -- and it's a flawed belief. Meeting Vincent, she starts to realize that isn't true and she starts to do things she would've considered bad before. In that, her world starts to fall apart a little bit.

Ryan: They have this relationship and we really want to see it tested at any moment. It gets scary to think that he could kill her. We really want to push the danger, which is lovely against the romantic side of it. It’s the yin and the yang. We all love the bad boy or the hard-to-get woman and to watch that play out, it prolongs [it]. It’s great TV because it’s a long journey.

THR: Internal struggles seem to be an ongoing theme. What do you hope to delve deeper on?

Kreuk: Every crime is a metaphor for whatever is going on for her or for Vincent or both of them. With her and Vincent, how they begin to come together because they're five gajillion things keeping them apart -- emotional instability, the fact that they don't trust each other or anybody, that he needs to stay away from the public. What you have is two people who have to find creative ways to relate with each other, where Catherine actually has to sit and write a letter by hand to give to him. You don't have three episodes and then they're having sex.

THR: In Vincent’s case, we know there are other factors at play. Can you explain his Muirfield connection?

Ryan: There’s a higher power, Muirfield, which is trying to track him down which he’s on the run from. He wants to be human and he wants to not have to live his life in hiding. When he meets Catherine, he realizes they both want the same things – to gain justice and maybe be together. Because they’re alpha about it, they keep knocking heads. It’s about gaining trust from each and learning not how to be ticked off. She will eventually make him realize that this beast mutation can be for the better instead of something he needs to hide from. There’s more hope for him as the series goes on.

THR: The mutations, as was mentioned earlier, play a big role in your character's story. How much will we be seeing that evolve?

Ryan: The mutations will create these impulses in him that he can't control, which are very deadly and dangerous. He's going to be completely unaware of what's happening.

Kreuk: When Catherine's committed to something, she's committed. With him, she doesn't know what that is yet.

THR: I assume most of the episodes will be told through Catherine's perspective, but will we ever see events unfold from the Beast's POV?

Ryan: I think so. I think we'll start to see Vincent's story take over some episodes. There is a lot of flashbacks happening and J.T. (Austin Basis) acts like Vincent's confidante and he keeps him in hiding, so we want to play with the backstory of the two because that's his only outlet. It's almost like he's in a stunted marriage with J.T.

THR: Who would be the dream guest star to appear on the show?

Ryan: Linda Hamilton [from the 1987 TV series], though I don't know if she'd do the show. I would like her to come on and play someone completely different than Catherine [in the original series], maybe someone from Muirfield.

THR: What was the funniest moment filming the pilot?

Ryan: Whenever the Beast mask is put on me, I get into this crazy alter ego joker. Kristin cannot stop laughing, which is detrimental to me for my performance. I also got nicknamed "Diva" because I have an addiction to coffee, but back in New Zealand, coffee is a real luxury -- like wine -- so I really hated the coffee in Canada; it was weak and not good, so I always want proper coffee. The intern who always has to get my coffee nicknamed me "Diva" in a loving way. He'd bring the coffee in and it'd have "Diva" written on the cup.

THR: What are you hoping viewers will get from watching the show?

Ryan: I want them to be intrigued and I want them to feel the mystery of these two characters. It's hard because it's a pilot, so you can only say so much and do much. I hope people give it a good chance to get hooked in.

Kreuk: I want people to come out really understanding that the human being is so beyond everything we make prejudices about, judgments about, what we look at, what we think is a good or a bad trait. There's a soul that's beyond all that, and we're all connected in that way.

THR: If you weren't starring on this show, what other role would you have liked to have done?

Ryan: Six Feet Under -- even just for the final episode. You know how they fastforwarded through the characters lives? That was incredible.

Kristin Kreuk on ‘Beauty and the Beast’

The former ‘Smallville’ costar talks about coming home to The CW and playing a tough cop

The CW is where Kristin Kreuk got her start, or at least half of it is. “Smallville” premiered on the WB; which later merged with UPN to become the CW.

Now Kreuk stars in the new version of “Beauty and the Beast.” Catherine (Kreuk) is now a detective and the Beast, Vincent (Jay Ryan) is an Iraqi War veteran. We got to speak with Kreuk at the Television Critics Association press tour after the CW’s “Beauty and the Beast” panel.

CraveOnline: Will there be fights for Catherine in every episode?

Kristin Kreuk: I don't think every episode but I think there will be some to carry it through but it doesn’t make sense. She’s a detective, right? She’s not going to go around kicking people all the time. It’s really I think that we’ll have it sometimes.

CraveOnline: Well, in movies and TV, that is what detectives do all the time.

Kristin Kreuk: Right, they do, not on every show but I don't think it’ll be all the time. I think people responded a lot to it so then they’re going to want to do more. It’ll be interesting to see how it goes.

CraveOnline: How long did it take to shoot the fight scene in the subway, and how did you learn the moves like dodging the knife?

Kristin Kreuk: That fight, I was really sick shooting the pilot. We did a two week shoot and I was really sick, so I didn’t learn the fight sequence until pretty late in the game. I think we might’ve had a full day to shoot that. Now we have a huge fight that we’re shooting on Tuesday. It’s the end of the day after multiple chase scenes and a full scene. It’s at the very end of the day so it’ll start getting a little faster but I learn those things quick. Dance background.

CraveOnline: Was that shot in the secret subway station that’s below the actual one?

Kristin Kreuk: Yes, yes, yes. There’s a secret subway station in Toronto. There’s one below the main subway that used to be running and doesn’t run anymore so you can shoot in there all night long and it doesn’t matter.

CraveOnline: In real life, what is your strength as a fighter if you had to use it?

Kristin Kreuk: No, I can’t use it. I would get destroyed. I’m not Maggie Q. I can look decent doing it and I would probably not want to fight anybody, so there’s that.

CraveOnline: What is fun about the discipline for you?

Kristin Kreuk: I love physical movement. Dance was my favorite thing and I was a gymnast and I find that expression through movement is easier in some ways than expression through words. There’s something very satisfying about, even in yoga, the practice of it. It feels centering to use my body in that way.

CraveOnline: Does Catherine have her own dark side?

Kristin Kreuk: I think the whole concept is we all do. And it’s not like a dark side, but there are things about ourselves that we want to hide, that we think are bad. Sometimes they are destructive and sometimes they are violent, even if it’s you say something to me and I get pissed and I say something mean to you.

So for Catherine, she has a lot of stuff that she’s buried down and her impulse towards revenge which is a violent act isn’t okay. Her impulse, and she understands it’s her impulse towards stopping these people that hurt her mom, and she believes that somehow that’s going to make it better. But Vincent in some ways knows that it won’t, that no matter how much you exact, I don't know, justice in the world, it won’t make that feeling go away and that is her darkness.

CraveOnline: What is the dynamic between you and Jay Ryan?

Kristin Kreuk: Jay and I get along really well. It’s so wonderful. I feel very comfortable with him. I feel like we giggle a lot and there’s an easiness to it so we have a good friendship developing already and that makes it so easy.

CraveOnline: How did you develop that slow burn romantic tension?

Kristin Kreuk: That’s an interesting question. I think that it’s just the nature of how the two characters relate, based on their own individual struggles. Catherine doesn’t want to acknowledge that she may feel vulnerable in that way so she’s making it about a case. She’s making it about we need to just figure out what happened to my mom and this will be over. She really doesn’t want to connect to that vulnerability. It’s uncomfortable for her.

CraveOnline: Will there be other love interests for her to challenge Vincent?

Kristin Kreuk: Yes. I think so. Yes, yes.

CraveOnline: What went through your head when you saw Jay at the audition with a half shaved head from his previous role?

Kristin Kreuk: Well, I came in and he just had the side of his head shaved. I was just like "that’s an interesting hairdo," but I didn’t really think about it. I think he focuses on it more than I focused on it to be honest.

CraveOnline: Did they make him wear a wig?

Kristin Kreuk: It was a terrible wig and he was a little self-conscious about it but it was fine. I wasn’t focusing on that. I’ve seen bad wigs before

Kristin Kreuk isn't just another 'Beauty' in this role

Former 'Smallville' actress takes on action role in new CW series. "Being a cop" is a challenge, Kreuk says.

4:59PM EDT October 18. 2012 - Kristin Kreuk revels in her new role as a female detective with an unusual new man in her life.

She plays Catherine Chandler, in the drama Beauty and the Beast, which airs Thursday night on CW (9 ET/PT). Yes, she's the Beauty to Jay Ryan's Beast, who goes by the name of Vincent. Smallville devotees will remember Kreuk as Lana Lang.

Kreuk, 29, is a little too young to remember very much of the original late 1980s CBS television series, starring Linda Hamilton and Sons of Anarchy star Ron Perlman. "I watched a bit of it after we started. But our show's quite different," Kreuk explains.

For example, Hamilton's Catherine was an assistant district attorney. And Perlman's Vincent was born with his unique appearance, while Ryan's character turns into a beast, à la the Incredible Hulk, when he is enraged.

The lead role is perfect for Kreuk, who with business partner Kendra Voth started a website designed to encourage girls to feel empowered.

The actress recently took some time out from shooting Beauty and the Beast in Toronto to talk about the series.

Q: How did the role come about for you?

A: "Someone called me about it. I met with the producers ... and they were just really lovely and I liked talking with them and I thought that it would be really interesting to collaborate with them on this project."

Q: Had you ever seen the earlier series with Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman?

A: "Oh, I think that I missed it. Being born in '82, I never really watched it. I have a recollection a little bit maybe of reruns, something, but I never really watched the show. I remember the poster for some reason."

Q: How would you describe your character, Catherine?

A: "She kind of has her life split in two: which is kind of pre-Mom being assassinated in front of her and post-Mom being assassinated in front of her. She's a very driven woman who has really decided to be a detective in order to take control of everything to make sure that bad stuff doesn't happen anymore, to kind of make sense of the world. (There are) the good guys and the bad guys, and if you get the bad guys, then everything's OK. She is kind of Type A. She's not very good with men. She's pretty funny. She's really quite solid. And she's pretty exciting primarily as a strong urban woman."

Q: What is the most challenging thing about playing this character or working on this show?

A: "Being a cop. There's a certain authority that being a cop or being a detective — you carry with you at all times. You're the one that's behind that yellow line. You're the one that is there when the public isn't allowed to be there. You see everything, everything about humanity that most people don't want to look at and don't want to believe, in some ways, exists. And so for me, it's tough to carry that authority with me all the time. I tend to be a little more shy, maybe a little more reserved, maybe less like ... I'm a little more Canadian, you know. So to carry that is challenging."

Q: What is the most rewarding thing?

A: "She's so layered and interesting. I get to play a lot because she's living a dual existence. She has her cop life and she now has this whole world with this beast creature who is kind of difficult to understand and unpredictable and is counter to everything — all the structure that she's put in place in her life to feel OK. For me, that unraveling is fascinating."

Q: Do you think that there are a lot of people who compartmentalize everything going on in their lives?

A: "I think there are degrees obviously. I mean, I compartmentalize aspects of my life. I have a certain awareness of it, but I know that I do it. Literally, when you're in one compartment, you don't remember what happened in the other compartment. ... I think that to cope, people do that sometimes. For Catherine, it's to cope, but it's also to protect a secret. That's tough."

Q: You've done TV series before, but is there anything different about this experience for you?

A: "Oh so much is different about this experience. I think coming into this being nearly 30 is really wonderful. I have a certain insight and experience. I have a certain perspective. I have certain realistic expectations about television and the process, and I don't get as caught up in things or stressed out about things. I feel like I can share my voice. I have a certain confidence in myself now that I didn't before. That feels so freeing and I love it."

Q: So if you weren't an actor, what would you be doing?

A: Interesting question. I haven't thought about that in a long time. I want to produce. That's ultimately where I would love to move into from acting into creative production. There are many other things I'm interested in, but realistically, that's where I'd want to go without going back to school."

Q: I've read about your involvement in a website called Girls By Design (girlsbydesign.com). Can you please tell me in your own words a little something about it?

A: "The intent for Girls by Design was to have a place where young women could come to, you know, mostly teenagers, could come and have a very real experience. Right now, it's mostly a blog and we have girls that write articles on it. Ultimately, it would be great if we could have a full magazine-style website — with a self-esteem-building contest — that is really focused on empowering as opposed to selling."

Q: Why is this project so important to you?

A: "I think empowering young women is really important. I think that a lot of the way that we have been marketed to and the way that we have been represented and the way we represent ourselves — not to take our responsibility out of it — is really limiting. I really struggled with that in school, and I got really angry about the way that we were represented. I wanted to change that and be part of getting girls out there and excited and driven to participate in society in a powerful way. And I think that if we did do that, we'd have a lot wonderful effects. I'm a little idealistic, and I want to live in a peaceful loving world."

Q: Do you have any other projects coming up that your fans can look forward to?

A: "I finished a funny little (sci-fi) comedy a while ago called Space Milkshake (with Amanda Tapping, Robin Dunne and Billy Boyd). I don't know when it's being released or how it's being released. I imagine it'll be small. It's pretty goofy and fun.

Fünf Fragen an Kristin Kreuk

Five questions with Kristin Kreuk of 'Beauty and the Beast'

Posted 9:37pm on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012

Kristin Kreuk

Kristin Kreuk, the leading lady of TV's Beauty and the Beast, sometimes muses about going back to school and learning another trade. "I'll be turning 30 soon," she says. "Aside from acting, I don't have a lot of other skills." Not that Kreuk needs a career Plan B at the moment. She has been a viewer favorite for more than a decade on the CW, the network airing Beauty and the Beast (8 p.m. Thursday). Before this show, she enjoyed a long run as Lana Lang, Clark Kent's boyhood love, in Smallville. Maybe Kreuk will figure out one day what her career alternative should be. But she knows from playing a homicide detective on Beauty and the Beast that it's not going to be police work. "It's fun to walk onto a staged crime scene and pretend my way through it," she says. "But I would sincerely be at a total loss if the situation were real."

1 Beauty and the Beast is a classic love story that dates back to the 1700s. It has been adapted many times and in many different ways. What was it about the premise that appealed to you?

With these old stories and fairy tales that have been translated over and over, the themes are very timeless and universal. You can take these stories and the metaphors within, you can apply them to whatever context and whatever time period you like, and they still have profound meaning. A story like Beauty and the Beast, with ideas about seeing beyond what is on the surface and about accepting that which you may perceive to be beastly within yourself, that works anywhere, including in post-9-11 New York City.

2 What do you like most about your character, Catherine Chandler?

The fact that I can create a female character that's complex and interesting and strong. Playing a detective is new and unique for me. I haven't had an opportunity like this until now. It's wonderful to come in playing something authoritative right away. It's a great stretch for me personally.

3 How soon before Catherine and Jay Ryan's Vincent, a military doctor turned "beastly" by military experiments to create super-soldiers, become an item?

We're not in a hurry to do that, to be honest. There are going to be many roadblocks that keep them apart.

4 But isn't the point of the show that these two characters are meant to be a couple?

That's true. And after a certain time, they will understand that they have feelings for each other. But that doesn't mean it's best for them -- or best for the show -- for them to do anything about it immediately. When it comes to relationships, I think there's more drama if they continually keep missing each other.

5 What do you like most about your life as an actress?

It's a wonderful way to explore and to express emotion. Maybe it's a little weird to do it in such a public way, but I love how it allows me to explore the human psychodynamic and to try to figure out what human beings are like and why. That's something about my job that never gets old.

Jay Ryan im Interwiev mit " TV Addict "

Jay Ryan Dishes on the Danger of the Beast in His new CW Series BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

By Tiffany Vogt on October 18th, 2012

Last week introduced viewers to the murky world of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, a world where Vincent Keller (Jay Ryan) hides in the shadows, trying to keep the beast in side him at bay. But in a twist of fate, a young woman he had rescued years before came back into his life in such a way that he could no longer hide from the outside world. Detective Catherine Chandler (Kristin Kreuk) may not have intended to unearth the one person who may hold the key to her mother’s unsolved murder, but recognizing Vincent from that fateful day, she could not stay away. Alas, this only tipped off a government organization that had been searching for Vincent and now they are both caught in the crosshairs as Muirfield circles closer and closer.

In an exclusive interview, star Jay Ryan took a few moments to share the inner turmoil that Vincent struggles with and what kind of threat the beast within still poses to everyone around him.

In this upcoming second episode, how much of presence does Muirfield have in it? Are we going to start seeing one identifiable villain, or will it more black suit-kind of guys?

JAY: In episodes 2 and 3, Muirfield reveals one of the villains of the series. Muirfield has started to pick up on Vincent’s connection with Catherine, and it gives them bait to not only go after Vincent, but to go after something that is precious to him: Catherine. So we start to see a character called Silver Fox, who we saw in the pilot. He sort of heads up Muirfield — or rather the Vincent-beast part of it — and he sort of starts to creep his way in. But not by going directly after Vincent, but by going after Catherine knowing that once Vincent finds out that he’s going to let himself be a little more easily drawn into their net.

What kind of effect does the threat of Muirfield closing in have on Catherine and Vincent’s potential relationship?

JAY: Vincent had been lulled into some sense of a normal life when he meets Catherine, but he learns very quickly the risks. He’s not stupid, so he understands the consequences that Catherine’s involvement with him puts on her and he knows how vicious and deadly Muirfield are. So he starts to question whether the relationship with Catherine is worth it for her in terms of her safety, and there is a moment where he starts to back away from Catherine and their burgeoning relationship. So I guess Muirfield makes a dent in their relationship very quickly. However, Catherine is very alpha and strong-willed, so she just finds Muirfield another challenge that she wants to overcome to save Vincent.

Talking a bit about the beast transformation, when Vincent becomes the beast does he lose all self-control or mind-control? How does that affect him?

JAY: Initially when they experimented and created these beasts, almost unintentionally — they were supposed to be super soldiers, but they turned into these beast creatures — but right from the start when the genetic experiments added these beasts within them, they were uncontrollable. That’s why Muirfield shut down the experiment very quickly; because once they made them, they could not control them. They were playing God and it went awry. But over the past decade, since Vincent has been hiding with J.T. — and J.T. is a biochemist and Vincent has his medical background — together they have been researching what creates this beast within him and what the triggers are. So Vincent has gained some sense of self-control over the beast and when it triggers. I guess that’s why he allows himself to get a little closer to Cat. He feels now that he is not putting her in danger or risk, even though he is still a bit uncertain. He is not sure what this demon inside of him can do at any time. We also play with the idea that Vincent has possibly had relationships in the past that have not turned out well because of this creature within him that has a very killer-instinct. But I guess now, he feels he has some measure of self-control; yet he is just beginning to see how much he trusts himself around Catherine. However, as the series goes along, we do discover that this beast is perhaps becoming stronger and beginning to overtake him a little bit.

At this point is Vincent medically treating himself. Has he and J.T. come up with something to keep the beast contained?

JAY: In the pilot, Vincent has given up. He spent a long time searching for this antidote that will turn him back into the person he was before he enlisted. But I think he’d definitely given up — and then Catherine’s entrance into his life gave him that emotional hope he needed to have a reason to try to find an antidote again. Also, Catherine holds some clues to where that antidote may lie and that could be — without giving too much away — that’s maybe the connection Vincent has with Catherine’s mother.

For you, as an actor, what kind of emotions do you tap into in order to portray the beast?

JAY: I use a lot of imagery to conjure the beast itself and just jump into it on a very physical level when I’m portraying the beast. Vincent, for me, is kind of the vessel for the emotional stuff which triggers the beast and his physicality. But because the way the beast is portrayed in our version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, we don’t give a lot if it away — because it is quite dark in this version of the beast. Vincent goes to such lengths to contain his killer-instinct. So I portray it more on a physical level because we sort of only see flashes at this point in time. It’s almost through a hazy point of view, whenever Catherine around or when there is a person he is attacking. So I guess the triggers that get me in there are with Vincent, it is the emotional level, and for the beast, it is a very physical role — more animalistic. As the series goes on, we’ll get more into the sort of super senses and abilities that the beast has.

What do you think Vincent most appreciates of J.T.’s friendship over the decade they’ve spent together searching for a cure?

JAY: J.T. is the only person that Vincent could go to and without him, Vincent would be a very lonely individual. He probably would not have made it through. Vincent could not have been tracking Catherine for the past 10 years; he would have basically given up because of his guilt over what he had done and the burden of being inhabited by this creature. So J.T. is Vincent’s life-line and it gives him a sense of normality, since he knew Vincent before he became the beast. J.T. is very rationale, and I guess he’s like the foreboding yet nurturing mother — in an odd kind of way. So J.T. is sort of a moral compass to help keep Vincent’s head straight. Thus when Catherine enters Vincent’s life, that relationship between Vincent and J.T. shifts. Vincent is targeting a more personal relationship — emotional and intimate relationship — with Catherine. For him, that’s his next level of trying to reenter society as a normal human being. But it’s J.T.’s job to remind Vincent that he is not a normal person and he cannot be reckless about what he could do to anyone who enters his life.

Even though Vincent and J.T. have such a strong bond, is it still conceivable that Vincent could still pose a threat towards his friend?

JAY: Yes, he is still a threat, but J.T. is aware of all the beasts’ threats. So it’s almost like J.T. can take care of himself around Vincent. That’s the only reason he can stay close and watch over him. Because J.T. knew Vincent before he had this atrocity done to him, Vincent feels like J.T. is the link to his past. But Vincent is definitely a threat to J.T. and that threat will grow since they are both lulled into a false sense of safety. Vincent is threat to anyone and everyone, including himself.

Then what can you share about how Vincent gets involved in the upcoming episode in Cat’s investigation?

JAY: Vincent feels like he can do a lot to help Catherine’s journey as a detective because of his super senses. These are abilities that he can use for good, like his sense of smell, his heightened strength, and his sort of sixth sense; and he sees that as a way into Catherine’s life, to further their relationship. So in this next episode, Vincent is tracking Catherine because he is aware of Muirfield targeting her, and he’s very closely watching her without her knowing. And as he’s following her, he sees something. But because she doesn’t know that she’s being watched by him, he hesitates to tell her. Yet he feels he has to tell her because in this particular case, she’s taken the wrong path. She’s after someone who is innocent. So Vincent’s morals say he has to let her know, even though he does not want her to know that he’s sort of been stalking her for her own protection. So he kind tells her that he wants to help her with her case because he doesn’t want the wrong person to go to jail. At first, Catherine feels uncomfortable, but she then realizes that this is a way he can help her. And that is the way they start to form a relationship. It’s not a romantic one initially because Vincent is a bit of a mess and Catherine also has a lot of issues with relationships. So, for them, this is the best way to start a relationship — sharing common knowledge to save people.

Destiny will not be denied, and no beast could ever keep Catherine and Vincent apart. To see how they rise to the challenge of containing and subduing the beast and evading Muirfield’s thorny net, be sure to tune in for an all new episode of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST on Thursday, October 18th at 9PM on The CW (Showcase in Canada)

Jay Ryan as Vincent and Kristin Kreuk as Catherine.

LOS ANGELES | The CW's "Beauty and the Beast" isn't your mom's "Beauty and the Beast."

In the new drama, either character could qualify as beauty or beast, says Kristin Kreuk, who plays Catherine. "We don't know where your 'beast' is at any time."

Because she's not a helpless heroine -- this Catherine knows martial arts -- it's a much more balanced relationship, one that doesn't borrow heavily from the Ron Perlman/Linda Hamilton television series.

"We wanted Catherine to be somebody who could be saved by Vincent but would also save him," says Executive Producer Sherri Cooper. "Love today is you save each other, so we started there. And then we wanted to understand why Vincent was a beast."

In the update, Vincent Keller was the subject of medical experiments. When enraged, he becomes a beast, unable to control his strength or senses.

Jay Ryan, who plays Vincent, says "he's a military experiment gone wrong." Those "Hulk-out" moments come from a mixture of DNA. "He has the eyes of an eagle or a hawk, the smell of a wolf, the strength of an elephant or a tiger."

To capture that physicality, the New Zealand native draws upon his stage past. "I trained in physical theater, so anything physical excites me and is usually where I start as an actor."

Kreuk (who played Lana Lang on "Smallville") and Ryan (a veteran of "Young Hercules," "Xena: Warrior Princess" and "Terra Nova) had to do a "chemistry read" to see if they'd be good together.

"I didn't quite know what they were seeking," Kreuk says, "but I felt it was really easy to work with him."

"It's having the same temperament and ideals," Ryan says. "If you do a good performance you can make it happen with the right words. 'Chemistry' is such a Hollywood term."

Kreuk, a fan of the "Beauty and the Beast" animated feature, and Ryan, a student of TV's version, were both attracted to the romantic element.

"I loved the beast (in the TV edition)," Ryan says. "He was very chivalrous, intelligent and well-educated. I want to bring those aspects as well to my version."

He also was burdened with some fairly complex makeup. In The CW retelling, makeup comes into play only when the beast comes out.

"I'm normally a very chilled-out person," Ryan says. "I really have to do a lot of research, looking into animal experiments and physicality in order to use that as my base."

More specifically, he sees the characters as Shakespearean.

"Vulnerability," Kreuk adds, doesn't have to translate into "victim." "With this she can be emotionally present but still strong."

In the first episode, viewers encounter Vincent through Catherine's eyes. But that can change as time goes on.

Cooper says Vincent will become "beastlier" as the series unfolds. "We're also going to explore a past situation that went badly and the person wasn't a murderer that he killed."

A reasonable template: "Dexter."

"If you fall in love with a Dexter, what do you do?" Cooper asks. "You want to get out but you're already half in and he's got this moral code, but is it his fault? Is it a disease? It's obviously complicated."

For Vincent a relationship is also problematic. Executive Producer Kelly Souders says "the last person he should have invited into his life is a cop."

Ryan says he finds himself transform while in the makeup chair. As artists apply scars and other signs of his "beastly" side, he transforms.

"He likes to run around and scare people, too," Kreuk says.

Since the pilot, the two have become friends and realize the series could be their defining work.

"There are pros and cons to it being a huge hit and pros and cons to it flopping," says Kreuk. "Either way ou have a wonderful experience. I'd love to work with this cast, crew and producing team for a while, but things are what they are."

Adds Ryan: "It's my foot in the door in the American market. But I've got a career elsewhere if it doesn't work out."

Already a fan? Linda Hamilton. Also working in Canada (where the show is filmed), she sent the two stars photographs and wished them well.

"It feels really cool to have her know about what we're doing and wishing us well," Kreuk says. "It's rad."

Beauty and the Beast Scoop: Seeker Star Bridget Regan to Recur As

[Spoiler]

Legend of the Seeker alum Bridget Regan next will grace our TV screens with an arc on The CW’s Beauty and the Beast, TVLine has confirmed. Regan will recur on the freshman drama as beastly Vincent’s onetime fiancée Alex, who for years has believed that the love of her life died in Afghanistan. When she discovers that Vincent is in fact alive… well, you (and she) can only wonder what happens next. RELATED | Fall TV Poll: Is Beauty and the Beast More Than Skin Deep? Beauty airs Thursdays at 9/8c; Regan first appears in Episode 9. Since Seeker wrapped its syndicated run in May 2010, Regan has kept busy with roles on TNT’s Perception, Person of Interest, NCIS: Los Angeles and the period drama pilot The Frontier, which didn’t make NBC’s fall 2012 slate.

Jay Ryan im Interwiev mit " The Examiner "

Jay Ryan teases Vincent's biggest threat & Bridget Regan on 'Beauty & the Beast'

The last we left Vincent (Jay Ryan) on The CW's Beauty and the Beast, he had turned himself into Muirfield in order to protect those he cares about, including Catherine (Kristin Kreuk) and JT (Austin Basis). It wasn't something he saw as a risk because he knows he can always make an escape. However, when Catherine showed up at the facility, he tapped into his Beast side in order to protect her from the agents on the spot. His intentions were good, but by taking out a small section of Muirfield, couldn't that actually leave him in even more danger from those who remain-- and now may want revenge?

"He’s really exposed himself in that respect, and I think he feels that he has to get out of Muirfield full-stop. He got to sort of have a plan of attack where he handed himself in, but he ended up slaughtering the guard. So he’s kind of in this place where he has a sense of slight relief because the men that were mostly after him have now been taken out. He has a bit of breathing room, he feels," Ryan revealed to LA TV Insider Examiner

Muirfield’s sort of off his tail for now, so there’s room for Vincent to jump into the relationship a little heavier."

Though maybe not too heavily. After all, as Ryan reminded us, this is the first time in ten years that Vincent has let someone new into his life-- let alone someone for whom he has feelings. Though he said the relationship between Vincent and Catherine is "deepening constantly" as episodes go on, Vincent is still afraid of the "image of the Beast" that Catherine has already seen and therefore "afraid to take the jump" into something more serious-- or physical.

"They're both afraid to experiment with it at this point," Ryan said. "But the biggest leap Vincent has taken is with his relationship with Catherine."

Still, holding back will leave both characters having to deal with other potential significant others while still dancing around each other. For Catherine that is Evan (Max Brown), who Ryan admitted is "hot on Vincent's heels," even without realizing it.

"We are exploring more about how the Beast within him is changing him on a DNA basis—how it’s changing Vincent on an emotional, chemical basis. And as he’s leaving these traces, there’s the threat of Evan finding out who he is because he’s so close to Catherine. Evan’s job, as you know, is to dissect bodies and detect DNA; he’s like the genius of this stuff, like what JT’s doing on a smaller level. Evan knows more of the progression of Vincent, even though he doesn’t know who Vincent is yet," Ryan said.

"The real human element of Vincent comes into it, and that's jealousy...He also has this jealousy factor because not only can Evan unleash Vincent’s identity to the world, he also can steal Catherine’s heart. For Vincent, at this point, that’s a bigger threat for him in this world than being caught by Muirfield."

Ryan added that there are also parts of Vincent's past coming into play, too, as some who knew him before he went off to war (and believed he was dead this whole time) find out about his new life and where he lives to pop in and create more complications.

"His ex-fiancee pops up into the picture, and that’s a huge shock for Vincent because he’s kind of really left himself open to that woman, and he has to deal with these old feelings," Ryan said of the on-screen relationship with guest star Bridget Regan to be explored in episode nine.

"You find out the reasons why he left that relationship, and we also learn more about the state he was in when joined up with the army when he lost his brothers. It gets quite dark at that point."

There are certainly obstacles standing in Vincent and Catherine's way of a "traditional" relationship. Catherine even makes a concentrated effort to stop thinking about Vincent because she claims she can never really be with him (well, not in public anyway). But at the end of the day, if they're not still drawn to each other, and if they're not still trying to make something work, there wouldn't be a show anymore, right?

EXCLUSIV : Jay Ryan im " The Insider "

'Beauty & The Beast' Flashes Back!

When TheInsider.com caught up with Jay Ryan earlier this month, he teased that clarity into Vincent's past was coming and as you can see from our exclusive photo, that time has come!

"I'm really excited to continue building off of Vincent's origins because that's the past ten, fifteen years of his life before he became the beast," Jay said. "Where are all those people from his life? How is he keeping away from family members, ex-lovers, or fiancees, maybe? All of that stuff starts to be revealed. And as Catherine and Vincent's relationship heats up, those characters may just come up to pose a threat. His past may catch up with him."

In the December 6 episode, titled Trapped, JT suspects that Catherine is the trigger of Vincent's blackouts, so JT injects Vincent with endorphins and sedatives that force him into a fugue state in an attempt to disprove the theory. Through that, the audience is treated to flashbacks of Vincent's time in Afghanistan when he received his first super soldier shot, and remembers who injected him with the DNA altering substance.

So, is Cat the one causing Vincent's blackouts? Tune in to The CW's Beauty and the Beast, on December 6 at 9 p.m., to find out!

Jay Ryan previews ‘Beauty and the Beast’ finally taking Vincent’s POV

November 29, 2012 By: Danielle Turchiano

Beauty and the Beast is a high-concept genre show that walks the line between straight police procedural and complex supernatural series. The early part of the season skewed much more heavily toward the former—and therefore toward being told from cop Catherine’s (Kristin Kreuk) point of view. But luckily for us (and series star Jay Ryan), it looks like the tide is turning and Vincent is finally getting his time to shine. After all, he is what makes this show unique.

“I’ve been pushing for the mythology 100% because that is what drew me to the project in the first place. Vincent is the staple of the tone of the mythology in this show, and I really want the show to be a balance of the procedural and the mythology, and I think it can be a mix of those two genres, but it can be a tough thing to do. As I see more and more episodes starting to come in, though, it’s really getting there [and] that’s what keeps me interested in coming to work every day,” Ryan told LA TV Insider Examiner when we caught up with him on a rare shooting break a few weeks ago.

Enter “Out of Control” and “Trapped”, or as we’re calling them “Vincent’s Very Special Episodes.” As we’ve already started seeing, Vincent’s DNA has started mutating, leaving him with periods of lost time and uncontrollable Beast mode and moods, putting his loved ones at risk. But JT (Austin Basis) thinks he has found a cure—not for Vincent’s overall affliction, but for the recent amplification of it.

“Vincent is basically self-imprisoned in a cage because he’s going to try to get rid of this mutation that’s causing him to black out,” Ryan said of “Out of Control.”

As this thing mutates, we flash back in these black outs, and that’s where we start to discover where this Beast experiment started, who started it, and the connection to Catherine and her mother. It’s quite a shock to Vincent because he has these memories that he just didn’t remember before…He doesn’t really trust himself, and we find out why he doesn’t trust himself for different reasons as the series goes along. We start to unravel, through flashbacks, how he started to turn into the Beast, and we pinpoint the different people it was done by.”

Once Vincent starts to feel like he has his Beast under control, thanks to this (however temporary) “cure,” Vincent starts to feel “the best he’s ever felt,” per Ryan.

“He starts to take risks by getting out in society a little bit more and trying to get into Catherine’s social life a little bit more,” he added.

But don’t assume that Vincent is itching for JT to continue on and cure him completely of his inner Beast.

“There’s this idea that if he lost this beast and was just a normal guy, then he fears what he would have to offer Catherine at all,” Ryan admitted.

“It’s a double-edged sword, but I think he just wants to know that he has control of this demon inside of him…[“Trapped”] is great episode for Vincent because we get to see him as a young soldier, as well, which is very different to how he is now, with this huge burden on his shoulders. And then as he discovers this antidote that suppresses the mutation, he starts to really take the lead in the relationship with Catherine. Vincent thinks he has the Beast under control, and he’s feeling really good.”

Beauty and the Beast airs on The CW on Thursday nights at 9 p.m. “Out of Control” airs on November 29th 2012 at and Trapped” airs on December 6th 2012.

Brian White im Interwiev mit " Rolling Out "

Brian White: The CW Star Sets the Record Straight

5:49 PM EST 11/28/2012 by Danielle Canada

Story by Danielle Canada

Images by DeWayne Rogers for Steed Media Service

Grooming by Erica Bogart

Wardrobe by Sarar

Brian J. White is in business mode and dressed for the part. Looking like a contemporary executive, White is fully committed to the role as he shoots with rolling out’s art director on the side of a desolate Atlanta building. He feigns hailing a cab and whistles for it loudly. He points off in the distance as though he sees something eye-catching and chuckles. Later, once the cameras are turned off, he relaxes on the passenger side of a motor vehicle and nods his head to the street poetry of rapper 2 Chainz, guffawing at times at a few of the rapper’s more ludicrous lines. For now, however, he’s in the zone.

The former footballer and model-turned actor is poised and showing off his 32 pearly whites. His skin is aglow and makeup free, a fact he’s proud of considering that he uses products from his wife’s skin care line. White doesn’t wear a metaphorical mask, either. He’s clear and precise in his answers to our questions and boasts that he can just about do it all; that is except sing. When pressed for details, the Renaissance man gives a surprising response. “I sure can’t sing,” affirms White with a laugh. “I’d have 10 albums out by now if I [could] sing. I’ve actually had offers to be in a boy band because I can dance, I can hold a tune but [I] can’t sing like Usher or MJ. … I’ve never wanted to do something just to do it. I wanted to do something because I was proficient at it or because I had some kind of skills at it that I could develop. When I start singing in church my mom says, ‘be quiet,’ so there goes that.”

Prior to the photo shoot with rolling out, White was on location at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s home church, for a block party sponsored by Operation Hope. Operation Hope educates young people about the importance of financial literacy, and the organization tapped White to explain how financial irresponsibility can upend one’s life. After leaving Dartmouth College, White had a credit score of 400, and while he’s no doubt improved from that financial low, he wants to help prevent others from experiencing a similar predicament.

“The American dream has always been to go work for somebody, but more and more people are working for themselves,” says White. “If you don’t understand how to get loans from banks, if you don’t understand how to start corporations, if you don’t understand how the international markets work, you can’t do that stuff. You’re not part of the game that everyone else is playing. You’re playing checkers still and everyone else has moved on to chess, especially for the urban community, it’s imperative that we become financially literate, that we work together and that we elevate ourselves.”

Read on to find out what else White had to say on politics, and his career.

White vs. Donald Trump

White has signed a petition requesting the removal of Donald Trump as a spokesman for Macy’s, and he was quite forceful in laying out his reasoning for doing so.

“If you follow Donald, which I do on social media, then you’ll see him blasting off; using his freedom of speech to say things I felt were inappropriate. You shouldn’t disrespect the president even if you don’t agree with their policies. I didn’t love Bush but I’m not gonna disrespect my president because I was raised to believe that that’s wrong. Just like my friend Roland Martin had to sit down from CNN for a tweet that he sent, which to me was silly… Donald Trump is the face of Macy’s, he speaks for a network, he has multiple television shows; he’s got to be held to the same level of accountability that Roland Martin or Kobe [Bryant.] Donald needs to be held to that same standard. He can’t slander the president, he can’t be racist when he’s talking about any president and if you do, we gotta play that same game. You did it to try to sway votes, I’m doing it to try to sway Macy’s votes so I can get you out of there so I can stop listening to you.”

White on His Career

On the CW drama “Beauty and The Beast.” White plays police chief Joe Bishop and obviously does a damn good job at it. Fans or “Beasties” as he affectionately calls them, listened to his social media requests and voted the series Best New Drama in an E! News-sponsored poll.

“It’s got a little bit of everything,” says White when asked what makes the series so magical. “It’s got every ethnicity. It starts with girl power. You’ve got Nina [Lisandrello] who’s a black female, you got Kristin Kreuk who’s an Asian female, they’re cops; they kick butt, they’re smart, and they have outside relationships. So there’s romance, there’s drama, there’s action and it’s got superheroes. Whether you like ‘Scandal,’ ‘CSI’ or you like ‘Smallville,’ you’ve got it all wrapped into one show with a good looking cast that can actually act. In the TV world that’s five stars,” he says.

In addition to catering to his legion of Beasties, White’s taking on a few pet projects of his own. He’s releasing a book titled Black Carpenter that focuses on youth empowerment and he’s in the process of producing two films this year. He’s tightlipped on his forthcoming production but offers this summary of sorts on his career. “I’m trying to be a good role model,” he remarks. “I feel like it’s a privilege to do what we [actors] do.”

A privilege indeed Mr. White, and one fans of this polymath can look forward to reaping the benefits from.
