Kult im Anmarsch: Newcomer Wes Ball inszeniert dystopischen Jugend-Roman "The Maze Runner"

Nachdem vor längerer Zeit "Twilight"-Regisseurin Catherine Hardwicke als heißer Kandidat für die Umsetzung des erfolgreichen Jugend-Romans "The Maze Runner" im Gespräch war, hat sich 20th Century Fox noch einmal umentschieden und Newcomer Wes Ball für den Regieposten engagiert.
Regisseurin Catherine Hardwicke ("Twilight - Biss zum Morgengrauen") wird nun doch nicht die Umsetzung von "The Maze Runner" übernehmen, denn 20th Century Fox hat mit Wes Ball einen neuen Kandidaten für die Adaption des Jugend-Romans um ein mysteriöses Labyrinth gefunden. Das Drehbuch zur Romanadaption ist bereits fertig, ob Ball jedoch nach seinem Engagement noch Überarbeitungen vornehmen wird, um dem Skript seine eigene Note zu verleihen, ist unklar. Fest hingegen steht, worum es in "The Maze Runner" von Autor James Dashner geht:
Eines Tages wacht Thomas in einem Aufzug auf, aber das einzige, woran er sich erinnern kann, ist sein Vorname. Seine gesamten restlichen Erinnerungen sind verschwunden. Er stellt fest, dass er nicht allein ist. Als sich der Aufzug öffnet, strömen weitere Jugendlichen auf ihn zu und begrüßen ihn. Der Ort, an dem er angekommen ist, ist eine große Lichtung, die von einer hohen Steinmauer umschlossen wird. Genau wie Thomas wissen auch die anderen nicht, warum sie dort sind und wie sie dorthin gekommen sind. Das einzige, was sie wissen, ist, dass sich jeden Tag in der Steinwand eingebaute Türen zu einem Labyrinth öffnen, welches hinter den Mauern liegt - und darin lauern grauenvolle Kreaturen... Nachts schließen sich die Türen wieder und alle 30 Tage wird ein neuer Jugendlicher mit dem Aufzug zu ihnen gebracht. Das ist zunächst alles, was Thomas in Erfahrung bringen kann. Als mit dem Fahrstuhl ein junges Mädchen den mysteriösen Ort erreicht, ist dies eine Sensation, denn sie ist das erste Mädchen in der aus 60 Jungen bestehenden Gruppe.
Jugendbuchverfilmungen sind derzeit in Hollywood sehr beliebt und erzielen größtenteils hohe Gewinne an den Kinokassen. Im November 2011 kündigte Autor James Dashner an, seine Romanreihe weiter auszubauen und ein Prequel zu "The Maze Runner" zu schreiben. Ob Newcomer Wes Ball das Projekt erfolgreich stemmt und der Adaption ein Höhenflug wie beispielsweise der "Twilight"-Saga oder "Die Tribute von Panem" bevorsteht, bleibt abzuwarten.

Im Roman "The Age of Miracles" wird die Geschichte eines jungen Mädchens erzählt, das sich nicht nur an ihr Erwachsenwerden gewöhnen muss, sondern sich auch einer tiefgreifenden globalen Katastrophe gegenüber sieht. Wie nun bekannt wurde, übernimmt die dank "Twilight" Jungendroman-erfahrene Catherine Hardwicke die Kino-Adaption.
Catherine Hardwicke ("Red Riding Hood", "Dogtown Boys") inszeniert "The Age of Miracles" für die Leinwand. Seth Lochhead, Drehbuchautor von "Wer ist Hanna?", adaptiert den Bestseller von Karen Thompson Walker. Die Geschichte ihres Romandebüts ist angesiedelt inmitten einer globalen Katastrophe nach der sich die Rotation der Erde auf geheimnisvolle Weise verlangsamt hat. Der Roman erzählt vor diesem Hintergrund eine Liebes- und Familiengeschichte mit einer jungen Teenagerin im Mittelpunkt.
Der 2012 veröffentlichte Roman wurde mit mehreren Auszeichnungen bedacht und unter anderem von BookPage, Publishers Weekly, Booklist und von O: The Oprah Magazine als eines der besten Bücher des Jahres bezeichnet.
Regisseurin Catherine Hardwicke hat zuletzt den Erotik-Thriller "Plush" abgedreht und arbeitet momentan an der Pilotfolge zur neuen Serie "Reckless".
Catherine Hardwicke Bids for a Comeback with 'Age of Miracles'
When director Gary Ross opted not to continue with the "Hunger Games" franchise--whether by asking for too much time or money or both-- no one sent his face around the web with bold-lettered "fired!" or with a big red X over it. But when Summit moved on from Catherine Hardwicke after the successful launch of the "Twilight" franchise, she was treated as someone who had been unceremoniously dumped.
Then the talented production designer-turned-director director of "thirteen" and "Lords of Dogtown" followed her "Twilight" triumph--remember, she's the one who set the tone for the entire series and arguably directed the most successful one by casting Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart--with the-rushed, ill-conceived "Red Riding Hood." In need of the right opportunity to hit another one out of the park, Hardwicke is set to direct the romantic dystopian thriller, "The Age of Miracles," based on Karen Thompson Walker’s bestselling debut novel. Seth Lochhead ("Hanna") has adapted the screenplay. River Road Entertainment’s founder Bill Pohlad will produce.
After the Earth’s rotation slows down, we follow an adolescent girl and her family as they cope with the what looks like the coming of the end of the world.
Hardwicke recently completed production on another thriller, "Plush," which she co-wrote with Arty Nelson, starring star Emily Browning, "Twilight" player Cam Gigandet, and Xavier Samuels. She is currently shooting a TV pilot, "Reckless," from a script by Dana Stevens.
River Road Entertainment has backed some trippy independent films, including Steve McQueen’s "Twelve Years a Slave," starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Paul Dano and Brad Pitt, to be released in December by Fox Searchlight, which also handled Terrence Malick’s Palme d'Or-winner and Oscar-contender "The Tree of Life." Recent releases include Doug Liman’s "Fair Game" starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts, and Robert Kenner’s "Food, Inc." Previous pictures include Ang Lee’s "Brokeback Mountain" and "Lust/Caution," Penn’s "Into the Wild," and Robert Altman’s "A Prairie Home Companion."
Pohlad is planning to make his directorial debut with John Wells Productions' "Love & Mercy," which centers on seminal moments in the tumultuous life of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys.

River Road Entertainment’s adaptation of Karen Thompson Walker’s best-selling debut novel The Age of Miracles has reached a deal with Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke to helm the project. The film revolves around a girl’s coming of age during a time when the world is about to come to an end. Seth Lochhead (Hanna) has written the screenplay for the film being produced by River Road Entertainment’s founder Bill Pohland. Set amidst an advancing catastrophe after the Earth’s rotation mysteriously slows, THE AGE OF MIRACLES is a suspenseful and romantic snapshot of one young girl’s adolescence, a poignant family drama, and a heartrending glimpse into the everyday tragedies and triumphs that define what it is to be human in a world that might just be ending.
Hardwicke recently completed production on Plush, a thriller she co-wrote with Arty Nelson. The film will star Emily Browning, Cam Gigandet, and Xavier Samuels. She is currently in production directing CBS’ drama pilot, Reckless, from a script by Dana Stevens.

MTV is looking to expand its scripted slate with a pilot order for “Eye Candy.”
The drama project is based on the R.L. Stine novel of the same name. “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke will executive produce and direct the pilot written by Emmy Grinwis.
“Eye Candy” follows tech genius Lindy whose roommate has convinced her to start online dating. But, Lindy begins to suspect that something isn’t right with one of her suitors. Suspecting him of being a deadly cyber stalker, Lindy teams with friends and cyber-police to find that there’s a potential serial killer on the loose in Manhattan. Even worse, he fits the description of one of Lindy’s online dates. She’ll partner with the online hackers to bring him and other deadly criminals to justice.
Produced by Blumhouse Productions, Hardwicke and Grinwis will executive produce alongside Jason Blum (“Paranormal Activity,” “Insidious,” “Sinister,” “The Purge”), Yvonne Bernard and Beth Elise Hawk.
In addition, the cable network has ordered the family drama pilot, “Finding Carter.” It comes from Fox’s “Bones” story editor Emily Silver and Terri Minsky. The coming of age drama follows Carter who discovers the mom she always knew actually kidnapped her as a toddler. She then must move back to her real family complete with the awkward experiences that comes along with the huge life changes.
MTV has had a so-so time of trying to build its scripted slate. It found hits with “Awkward” and “Teen Wolf,” but it floundered with its reboot of UK’s “Skins,” “Underemployed,” “The Hard Times of RJ Berger” and “The Inbetweeners.”

Victoria Justice has been cast in the pilot for MTV’s “Eye Candy.”
The Nickelodeon alum will play Lindy, a beautiful but reclusive hacker whose blog exposes everything from terrorist plots to suspected killers. Convinced by her roommate to begin online dating, Lindy is targeted by a dangerous cyberstalker and believes one of her suitors to be the culprit. When things take a deadly turn, she teams up with the city’s cyber-crime unit to catch the killer.
Casting marks Justice’s first since wrapping “Victorious” on Nick and pursuing her music career.
“Victoria Justice is exactly someone we want to be in business with,” said MTV programming topper Susanne Daniels. “Not only does she resonate with our audience, she has a huge fanbase and is extremely talented. We are very lucky to have her.”
“Eye Candy,” written by Emmy Grinwis, is based on a novel by the same name by R.L. Stine. “Twilight” helmer Catherine Hardwicke is on board to direct and exec produce the drama. Jason Blum is exec producing with his shingle Blumhouse Prods., alongside Yvonne Bernard and Beth Elise Hawk.
