The pilot episode was directed and executive produced by Academy Award® nominee John Madden (Shakespeare in Love, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), and also stars Caitlin Fitzgerald (It's Complicated), in the role of Masters' wife, Nicholas D'Agosto (Heroes) and Teddy Sears (American Horror Story). Emmy and Golden Globe® award-winning actor Beau Bridges and Margo Martindale also appear. MASTERS OF SEX was created and executive produced by Michelle Ashford (The Pacific). The series will also be executive produced by Sarah Timberman, Carl Beverly and Judith Verno. Michael Sheen, Tammy Rosen and Thomas Maier will serve as producers. Sexuality under the microscope in Showtime's 'Masters of Sex' series
BEVERLY HILLS, California (Reuters) - The sexual revolution has been well-documented on TV shows like HBO's "Sex and the City," but a new Showtime drama "Masters of Sex" turns the lens on the pioneering couple who started the public conversation about sexuality.
The show, which premieres on September 29, explores the early relationship of groundbreaking sex researchers Virginia Johnson and William Masters. It documents their discoveries based on Thomas Maier's 2009 biography "Masters of Sex."
Johnson, who died last week at age 88, met Masters when she was a researcher for him at Washington University in St. Louis in the 1950s. Masters, who died in 2001, was a physician at the university and had begun researching sex in 1954.
British actor Michael Sheen, who plays Masters, said he was drawn to both the complexity of his character and the subject matter of researching sexual behavior at a time when talk of sex publicly was considered taboo.
"(Masters) is sort of a mystery to himself. He has so many locked rooms inside himself and he has to tread very carefully to make sure he controls his environment," Sheen said at a Television Critics Association meeting in Beverly Hills on Tuesday.
The show features many explicit scenes of sex, both in and out of medical settings, but Sheen said it explores topics far beyond just sexual gratification, and also resonates with the issues around the subject today.
"It doesn't matter if we know a lot more about sex or have more access to it now. It's the same problems with intimacy and dealing with people, of connecting and being vulnerable with other people, which is ultimately what the show is all about," the actor said.
Masters and Johnson, who married in 1971 and divorced after 20 years, were best known for their 1966 book "Human Sexual Response," written after years of testing of sexual arousal in couples. They published a second study, "Human Sexual Inadequacy," in 1970 and often appeared on talk shows and other programs to discuss their research even after their divorce.
"Masters of Sex" creator Michelle Ashford said she was eager to explore the couple's own relationship.
"Their story just needed to be told. No one really knew what they did, but they were instrumental in the historical movement of not only how we viewed sex but how we viewed men, women and society," Ashford said.
Sheen added that having the show on cable network Showtime allowed them to explore the topic of sex with more freedom than on conventional broadcast television channels, which are regulated by federal rules restricting nudity and graphic content.
On cable, "any subject matter is open to you, you can take risks and you've got 12 hours roughly per season to go into it ... you can start to treat characters with the complexity that they deserve," he said.

'Hollywoodreporter' über «Masters of Sex» Der "Hollywoodreporter" berichtet, dass die Pilotfolge von «Masters of Sex» zwar vor Nacktheit und Sex strotze, spätestens ab Episode zwei sei aber klar, dass die neue Showtime-Serie einen höheren Anspruch habe. Die Tiefe der Story und Bilder brauche sich nicht hinter entblößten Leibern zu verstecken. Der über alle Zweifel erhabene Cast und das Potenzial des Stoffes strafe alle voreiligen Kritiker bezüglich einer reinen Fleischbeschauung in «Masters Of Sex» Lügen.
Sky Atlantic HD wird bald ein neues Serienhighlight zeigen. Das Abounternehmen Sky hat sich in den vergangenen Tagen die Rechte an der neuen amerikanischen Serie «Masters of Sex» gesichert. Diese startet am Sonntag bei Showtime in Amerika und wird dort heiß erwartet. In Deutschland laufen die Episoden des Formats mit Michael Sheen und Lizzy Caplan in der Rolle zweier Sexualforscher demnächst auf Sky Atlantic HD. Von Showtime zeigt der Sender übrigens auch die Serie «Dexter», deren siebte Runde hierzulande kürzlich zu Ende ging. Die finale Staffel steht bei Sky noch aus, sie wird 2014 laufen. Während Sky «Dexter» nicht via Sky Go und Sky Anytime anbieten konnte, ist noch unklar, ob entsprechende Rechte bei «Masters of Sex» eingeräumt wurden. Eine Sky-Sprecherin nannte den Starttermin für die Showtime-Serie in Deutschland aber bereits exklusiv gegenüber Quotenmeter.de: Los geht es am Donnerstag, 5. Dezember 2013 - die zwölf Folgen werden jeweils um 22.00 Uhr laufen.

Five minutes with Michael Sheen Michael Sheen, star of TV, film and stage, has played a wide variety of roles ranging from Tony Blair in The Queen and David Frost in Frost/Nixon to Aro in The Twilight Saga. The actor now tells us about his latest role as patron of Kids in Museums, an independent charity dedicated to making museums open and welcoming to all families.
What will your role as patron involve? I’ll help Kids in Museums deliver their fantastic aim of making sure all children get the chance to experience the wonderful opportunities a museum can offer, in particular those who haven’t had the chance before. Of course, because I’m Welsh, I’m particularly interested in the charity’s work across Wales, working with tiny volunteer museums to big national museums, making sure they welcome everyone, of every age. Taking Over Museums – the annual day on which children are given a role in a museum which an adult would normally do – is a powerful, simple way of making that happen.
What made you want to get involved with Kids in Museums? I am passionate about children exploring and experiencing the arts, and having the right to do so. I’ve worked with the Children’s Commissioner for Wales on issues concerning children’s rights. Young people have the right to a cultural life, just like anyone else. It enriches, educates and empowers them. It makes all our futures brighter.
Which museums did you enjoy visiting as a child? I remember my first visit to the British Museum and discovering I had the power to travel through time and reach the furthest and most mysterious corners of the world. That visit made me realise anything was possible.
What role do you think museums play in helping to educate children? Museums offer lots of things to children, but in particular, through letting them get in touch with the past, they can imagine new futures. They throw a light on stories of a child’s community – from how their grandparents lived to how local industry was once run. Museums are about real stuff. In an increasingly virtual world, they offer something special – the thrill of the real.
